In this chapter Pony's dreaming and lying to hiself finally works. In this chapter he had finally gotten himself to believe that Johnny and DAllas are gone. It's not a joke anymore, he has finally came to relization that this is true not fiction. This has really happened and he isn't tore up about it anymore. He knows its true and he can live with it now.
Ponyboy's dreaming in this chapter works because he lies to himself and makes himself believe that Johnny and Dally were still living and that if he went to see Johnny he would be the same old Johnny, quiet voiced Johnny. And Dally would be the same rude, mean Dally.
In this chapter Pony finally convinces himself that Johnny and dally aren’t dead by lying to himself. he also convinces himself that he Killed Bob not Johnny. This finally works probably because he kept saying it to himself about one hundred times. Even when he went to court he believed that Johnny wasn't dead. it was only when the judge let them leave the court without a sentence to jail or anything does he realize that Johnny is dead.
Ponyboy's dreaming and lying to himself finally worked in this chaper because he finally gets it in his head that Johnny and Dallas are gone, and that they are never coming back anymore. He tought before that they would come beck, because he was dreaming and it didnt really sink into him.
