The author foreshadowed that johnny would use the switchblade in ch.2 by saying after the mugging that he took from the socs on the open lot, he carries a 6 inch switchblade in his back pocket wherever he goes so that won't happen again.
The author foreshadows in chapter 2 that Johnny would use his switchblade by telling us that Johnny had never been the same after the night he had got jumped, he told us that Johnny always carried a six- inch switchblade and that he would use it if he had to, nobody would beat him like they beat him. He would kill the next person that tried to hurt him, nobody would hurt him over his dead body.
